The New World Taihape Gumboot Gallop is a unique, challenging mixed-terrain run/walk event held in the Utiku hills south of Taihape. Replacing the former Taihape Half Marathon, the New World Taihape Gumboot Gallop is a fresh and exciting new run/walk event, complete with a new event date, new starting location, new course, and new organising team.
Choose between 4 event options (a 21km adventure run/walk, 12km run/walk, a 5km fun run and a 2.5km kids run) and, as we get ready for prize giving, it’s your chance to tackle the inaugural few hundred metres Gumboot Gallop, a fun run for all ages, in gumboots (compulsory) and fancy dress (optional).

The event is a major annual fundraiser for the St Joseph’s School Taihape. The funds raised from the event will be used to develop bicycle tracks for the school, promoting the health and fitness of the students by providing them with the safe and purpose-built cycling infrastructure. This will also enable the school to better utilise the biking equipment received from the Bikes in Schools project.
A unique multi-terrain event
The New World Taihape Gumboot Gallop provides participants with a selection of brand new running and walking events offering breathtaking views over the central Rangitikei district and beyond.
What can you expect from the New World Taihape Gumboot Gallop?
Tar, gravel, paper roads, farm paddocks … And did we mention hills? If the undulations of this brand new central New Zealand course does not take your breath away, the views certainly will.
You have four distance options to choose from, plus a free fun event (click here for detailed course descriptions and maps):
The approximate Half Marathon Adventure Run and Walk takes you on a figure-8 course, starting with a steady uphill along a sealed road. This is followed by a short stretch of gravel before heading onto a private farm track, crossing paddocks on an undulating off-road stretch before you hit a steep downhill along a paper road. From here, gravel roads lead you on a large loop back to the top before you hit the farm tracks and paper road again for a second whirl-through. After this second off-road stretch you head home on a combination of gravel and tar seal..
The roughly 12km Run/Walk starts off on the same course as the Half Marathon Adventure Run, but instead of following the figure-8 it keeps going along a 12km loop, and cutting out the paddock, steep downhill and paper road. The loop therefore starts and finishes on tar seal, with the middle section on a gravel road.
The 5km Fun Run begins in the opposite direction to the above events. This out-and-back course starts and finishes on tar seal with some gravel road in the middle.
The 2.5km Kids Run is run on a sealed road. It follows the same path as the 5km fun run, but turns around before reaching the gravel section.
Finishers medals will be awarded to all participants in the above distance options.
The Gumboot Gallop is a fun FREE event of a few hundred metres, taking place at the end of the day before prize giving. To participate in the Gumboot Gallop you need gumboots (compulsory), and fancy dress is encouraged. The course runs through farmland and may include some random obstacles, but nothing you won’t be able to traverse in your favourite pair of gummies.
